Flickr is an addictive online photo sharing website. The quality of photos there is humbling. Down below is a little account of how easy it is to get a photo from a camera onto this blog, or onto Flickr. The Collingwood Children’s Farm, and Abbotsford, Melbourne, 3067 groups have been going about as long as this blog, but on the weekend, I set up sister groups for Richmond, Collingwood, Fitzroy and Kew. Above is a beautiful photo characteristic of a school of photographers with monnikers such as Ziz, Nettsu, Lonely Radio, Helen Morgan and — in the case of this beautiful photo — Donina, who delight in finding beauty in urban details, and, in the case of S2uart have nothing less than an obsession with such mundanities as shopping trolleys, an aspect of life which has spawned an online photographic community limited to Melbournians which boasts more than 20 members. Yarra Bicyle Users Group
On my twirls along Yarra Boulevard this morning, I found out about Yarra BUG, a kind of community cell of Bicycle Victoria folks from Abbotsford, Alphington, Burnley, North Carlton, Clifton Hill, Cremorne, Collingwood, Fairfield, Fitzroy, North Fitzroy, Princes Hill and Richmond. They are leading the campaign for the removal of the Gipps St steps, those dreadful steps which cyclists and walkers need to descend from Gipps St heading away from the city and towards the Convent, the Children’s Farm, and Dights Falls. People coming from any of those places and heading towards the Botanic Gardens and the City, nead to dismount and push their bikes up little concrete channels next to the stairs. All the Pubs and Bars and some of the beers of Abbotsford
Here’s a useful starting point for an exploration of Abbotsford’s pubs and bars.
Unless my Google search skills aren’t up to it, though, Abbotsford doesn’t have any happy hours featured at The Happiest Hour.com which an acquaintance of mine claims to run, or to have invented, or something.
When in Abbotsford, do as the Abbotsrigines do and drink Abbotsford Invalid Stout, or Abbots Lager, or Abbotsford Sparkling (or any other CUB product of course), or a Mountain Goat beer, though that’s pretty weird, and actually from next-door Richmond. Beer critic Willie Simpson says of the Sparkling:
“Abbotsford Sparkling Ale is another heavyweight contender (8.5 per cent A/V), which CUB created to celebrate a century of brewing at Abbotsford. Unfortunately, this rich, malty ‘barley wine’ won’t be released commercially, but it does prove the big boys can make serious specialty beers.”
