Richmond Hill Cafe and Larder reviewed

Here’s John Lethlean’s review of Richmond Hill Cafe and Larder, the restaurant that goes along with the newly renovated cheese room.  I don’t say it’s cheap, but the queues at the door are evidence of the fact that it is not charging above market. Damn they do a good breakfast. It’s a 14/20 in Breakfast blog‘s and John Lethlean’s opinion alike. Thanks to S2uart for the photo, which is in fact from the Cafe itself.

Leinster Arms Hotel

I got lost in the backstreets of Collingwood north of Johnston St, a place I realised I had never been to before. From the car, I spotted the Leinster Arms Hotel in Gold St, described by someone on the web as one of Melbourne’s best side street hotels. It has a restaurant open for lunch and dinner seven days, and was, like The Carringbush, a favourite haunt of Uncle Chop Chop, who once described himself, politically, as to the right of Genghis Khan. Apparently they do a good roast goat and a hearty crab and mussell hotpot. But this is a lame post, I know. I will go there, despite the large photograph of Eddie Maguire, and then I’ll tell you more.

Salta rally

Melbourne Leader has shown me up as being asleep at the wheel, ignorant of a major incident of civil unrest by inner suburban insurgents: a rally of 100 burghers outside Richard Wynne’s office on Saturday. Although the paper does not say so, I can only presume that the rally was against an application by Salta to build a 10 storey commercial and residential development around Victoria and Burnley Streets. Salta’s website says:

“Salta has made a significant mark as a major retail developer with the $170 million Victoria Gardens development in Richmond. In addition to the shopping centre development, this project will absorb a further $300 million on additional retail, residential and commercial development at the former MFB training college, which backs on to the Yarra River.”
